Dispelling Myths and Misinformation

Image
Conservative talking points frequently portray immigrants as a drain on public resources or as being disproportionately involved in criminal activity. These claims are often exaggerated or false, as research consistently shows that immigrants contribute positively to the economy and are less likely to commit crimes than native-born citizens.       According to the ACLU , a central promise of Trump’s 2024 campaign is to “carry out the largest domestic deportation operation in American history” once in office. Trump is attacking birthright citizenship, barring undocumented children from schools, and again forcibly separating children from their parents at the border. The Trump team’s strategy is to dismantle our nation’s asylum protection system and attack human rights at the border.       Trump in October suggested that migrants who are in the U.S. and have committed murder did so because “it’s in their genes” AP News repo...

Instagram Storytelling

Image
Image from Flickr The goal of my Instagram storytelling is to inform my audience (CNU students) that anyone can write a story for the school paper. I'm also aiming to inform my audience that you don't have to have a job with The Captain's Log or be an active member to have your voice be heard! A lot of students are under the impression that the articles written in the newspaper all belong to The Captain's Log, but the purpose of the paper is to be the voice of CNU students. So if you write a story, your name will appear right above the story, as well as your email so anyone can reach out to you with any further questions. So your story belongs to you, the story is your intellectual property, and The Captains Log will give you credit where credit is due!  Check out my Instagram !

New research seeks to understand the relationship of COVID-19 experiences with anxiety and depression among first year college students

Image
Image from  USF Oracle The Covid-19 pandemic had a significant impact on college students’ mental health, specifically the classes of 2020 and 2021, new research reports . These impacts have raised the question of how college students’ mental health in relation to the pandemic can be better addressed by colleges. Depression and anxiety rates among college students are increased by factors such as sleep disruption, loneliness, and managing new academic demands, the study says. College students experience higher levels of stress in their first year, when they are transitioning, and factors related to race and gender are significant when observing stress levels. Transitioning to college is associated with academic stress, financial stress, and social stress.  The research article was published in July 2023 and participants in this study were incoming first year undergraduates (age 18 and older) at a Midwest small liberal arts college in the fall semesters of 2020 and 2021. The st...

The Joe Rogan Experience

Image
Joe Rogan came under fire last year when he did a sit down interview with Kennedy on his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience , regarding Covid-19 and vaccines. The three hour long episode is full of misinformation and conspiracy theories about the impact Covid-19 has had on communities, as well as the Coronavirus vaccine. The San Antonio Current reports that Rogan said in 2023 that "A lot of times if you see me on this podcast talking about s***, I probably just read the headline". The controversy surrounding his podcast began in 2021, when he encouraged his audience to ignore the advice of medical professionals regarding the Omicron strand of the virus. He received backlash for having a number of guests who were set on spreading their anti-vaccine agenda, providing no evidence or research, US News reports. His main talking point in 2021 was that Covid-19 is just like the cold and anyone who gets it just needs a couple days of rest. This was disproved by a countless numb...

ABC News and CNN on caffeine consumption

Image
The two news stories I found are in relation to the concern over how much caffeine is safe for the average person to consume. Pure Caffeine: Even a Teaspoon of Powder Can Be Dangerous from ABC News and Dark roasted and dangerous: Everything you should know about caffeine intoxication from CNN both analyze/interpret reports and studies from the US Food and Drug Administration, along with additional sources. The audience and story angles are very similar between the two stories. The ABC article aims to inform those who have either used or considered using concentrated caffeine products about the dangers of overconsuming caffeine. The CNN story aims to inform the average caffeine consumer of the risks of drinking too much caffeine.  Image from Flickr      Neither of the two stories benefit from the use of graphics or images, with only one image per story and no graphics between the two. I think the use of some kind of chart showing the rising number of ...
